The Encaustic Series
Have you had an interest in exploring painting with encaustic wax? Here is a series of classes for beginners or established encaustic artists alike to explore and share new (to you) techniques and materials. Painting with wax can go in so many individual directions and artist are constantly experimenting with incorporating new materials. Each class will have an hour of instruction followed by open studio time where you can work on your own pieces among fellow wax artists. All materials will be supplied, however, you will need to provide your own substrates. 8" x 8" wood panels are recommended. Registration in advance is required for each class, space is limited.
January 14th - Introduction to Encaustic Painting (and Collage) . Using materials provided, this is the perfect opportunity to jump in and try out encaustic painting without having to invest in materials. We will review basic board preparation, safety skills, basic materials needed to set up a studio, wax and pigment application, and and introduction to collage. Instructor: Connie Ehindero - Cost: $55
January 28th - Transparent and Opaque Pigments. Each pigment has special properties of opacity or transparency. Learn how to read the color charts for Enkaustikos and R&F paints and practice applications skills to get the most from each color. Apply learnings to your own work. February 4th - Pan Pastels and Oil Sticks. Add an another color dimension to your work, by introducing these pigmented mediums. Shift paint colors using these subtle applications. Instructor: Kathryn Bevier - Cost: $55
February 18th - Adding Photographic Imagery to Wax There are many ways in which to approach image transfer with encaustic paint and in this workshop you will learn an easy to follow way to achieving successful results and one you can practice at home once you learn the technique. March 4th - Stencils and masking we will provide premade stencils and materials for you to make your own. Work with stensils and also apply what you have learned about pigment opacity. Instructor: Connie Ehindero - Cost $55
March 18th - Printmaking with Encaustic Using wax based paints to create prints is such a great way to explore your visual language. You will learn essential information on the print making process with encaustic paints, from set-up, free form printing, and how to create marks and patterns using using a variety of tools. April 1st - Adding Words to Wax Images Many tools are available to incorporate words into your wax works. We will explore stamping, stencils, collage, inscribing, and walnut ink. We'll discuss the various directions words can take from graphic to literal readings. Instructor: Connie Ehindero - Cost: $55
April 15th - Color Worlds with Encaustic This class is a wonderful opportunity to really understand the nature of pigments and to further your knowledge and appreciation for developing your own sense of color. Basically, a color theory class but with the emphasis on identifying colors that work for you in your art making. Hone in on color mixing with greater clarity and learn how to alter the look of colors to create the mood you wish in a work of art. Instructor: Kathryn Bevier - Cost $55
