Classes for Tweens and Teens
The Mill Art Center & Gallery provides an environment in which the community can express and develop their artistic abilities through instruction, observation and interaction with professional artists. Our unique blend of classroom studios and professional gallery exhibition space encourages students to immerse themselves in art, with inspiration from instructors and the art that surrounds them. Our small class sizes ensure that each student gets plenty of one on one time in every class.
Children and teen classes follow the public school calendar. Arrangements may be made with specific instructors for make-up classes. Gift certificates for art classes and art purchases are available.
Due to a generous member donation and grant funding from the Genesee Valley Council of the Arts, the Mill At Center and Gallery is excited to be able to offer sign language interpreting for classes, talks and related programs. In order to successfully schedule an interpreter, we respectfully ask that requests are made two weeks prior to an event.

The Spiderwick Chronicles: Creatures in Clay
Explore the art of sculpting fairies, goblins, and sprites straight from the Spiderwick Field Guide. Step into the enchanting world of The Spiderwick Chronicles and bring its mischievous fairies and fantastical creatures to life—right at your fingertips! In this hands-on polymer clay sculpting workshop young artists will learn how to create their very own whimsical beings inspired by Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi.
Participants will begin by crafting sturdy wire armatures—the hidden skeletons that give their creatures life and movement. From there, they’ll explore how to knead and condition polymer clay to the perfect malleability, learn to sculpt expressive faces, delicate wings, and intricate details that make each fairy or goblin feel truly alive. With guided instruction, students will also discover how to use various sculpting tools, clay molds, found material out in nature and other art supplies to shape and refine their creations like professional creature designers.
This workshop celebrates imagination, creativity, and a touch of woodland mischief! Whether you’re a fan of fantasy worlds or just love working with your hands, you’ll leave with new sculpting skills, a finished magical creature, and a spark of wonder that makes the fairies and creatures from Spiderwick Chronicles come to life. Intuitive Mixed media Painting
Intuitive painting happens when you truly have no set image in your head about how your art will look when you are finished painting, and, you just let your blank paper or canvas lead you each step of the way. It is an exciting way to paint because there are so many possibilities and ideas for every painting! It is liberating because there are no rules, there are no restraints, you just allow for each paint stroke or mark that you have made to speak to you about the next one. Imagine that you can’t see the finished image until it is complete and so you are completely freed up from needless self-analyzing or the punishing effect of overly scrutinizing your work. Lastly, it can be very meditative and self-reflective as you explore all the possible combinations of color, value, shape, visual texture that show up through your own personal style of mark-making. What you paint will be your very own intuitive style, generated from all that is within you…yet very much inspired by the world around you and your experience of being on this planet. All materials will be provided.

Foundational Drawing
Foundational drawing is to painting what the alphabet is to writing essays, poems, and great novels. Learning to draw fluently changes how you see and create, opening a a world of new possibilities. All traditional fine art, in its beauty and mystique, rests on a handful of timeless drawing principles. These techniques are tools for effectively communicating visual truth. As you internalize them, your ability to bring your inner vision to life becomes more natural and precise. If you’re already an experienced artist this class will bring your expression to a new dimension of quality. If you’ve never once created art, this is the most effective way to begin.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Positive and Negative Shape creation, Unity, Balance, Illusion of space and Focal point are all important design principles in the creation of art. We will work with each element separately to understand their use in compositions and see how other artists have used them in their work. This is a class on concepts and we will use mostly collage materials to study each concept and create many variations in a collaborative workshop environment. These design concepts are applicable to all forms of 2 dimensional art and used in many combinations in drawing, painting and photography.
All materials will be provided.
