FEB.13 - Mar.5 :: QUIET PLACES :: CATHY CHIN

CATHY CHIN1 Big Tree, Cathy Chin, 6 x 14 - $600

QUIET PLACES

To do plein-air painting, is to be out there, painting outdoors on site, no matter the weather.
To be working in a landscape, observing the colors, shapes and perspectives closely in order to make sense of it and make a painting is a challenge.
It means finding a location, a flat place, a direction to look, then setting up an easel, getting paints, paper, water, brushes and palette in place and finally focusing on the light and what there is to be seen. Time passes. The landscape is observed and recorded and time slows.
Afterwards, a beautiful spot, a warm or a rainy day is well remembered.

RECENT EXHIBITIONS :: May 1 through June 2, 2009 LOOKING WEST Photographic Works by Chris Toalson Rochester Institute of Technology graduate student Chris Toalson exhibits his Master's Thesis works. Opening Reception:: May 8th 6:00 to 8:00 pm "In my current photographic work, I am exploring the prevailing mythologies of the American West. Now removed from the place I grew so fond of, my connection to the West survives through these contemporary representations. My photographs are images of images, in an effort to dissect a fabricated history that has become more important than the actual history itself. Through this investigation, I am also attempting to discern how the American West functions as the embodiment of what Americans want to believe about themselves and their national character." The show itself will consist of 8-10 large photographs exploring mythologies tied to the American West. All images will be for sale.

Albina Rose, handmade mixed media jewelry. Sylvie Mulcahey, a resident of Honeoye Falls, is the jewelry artist behind Albina Rose. Sylvie has been making jewelry for about 10 years now, but actively selling for the past 2. Her jewelry is an assortment of beadwork, wirework, and wire crochet. Sylvie's wire crochet cuffs are her signature item. They are original and very unique one of a kind pieces. Oct. 1 - Oct. 31, 2008 :: Stars in My Backyard
Astrophotography work by Joel Schmid

Joel Schmid – Astrophotographer::
I discovered Astrophotography purely by accident. Two Years ago my wife gave me a beginners telescope as a Christmas gift just for fun. With the typical Rochester winter weather, I didn't even get a chance to try it out until about two months later. Once I got the scope outside and aimed it at the full moon for my first view of the night sky with something other than my eyes I was simply blown away ! I had no idea that the simple white disc of the moon could hold so many fascinating craters, mountains, and flat grey expanses that looked like seas of grey dust. After that first night I visited a few websites to learn more about the moon and stumbled across an amateur photo site were people had taken a simple point and shoot digital camera and held up to the telescope eyepiece. I was so amazed at the results these people were getting I had to try it for myself ! I went out and bought a Canon point and shoot camera and a special mounting bracket that would allow me to point the camera lens down into the telescope eyepiece. I shot some nice images of the moon and after that there was no turning back. I soon upgraded to a better telescope that would automatically compensate for the rotation of the earth and began taking some really beautiful and interesting shots of the night sky. It never ceases to amaze me what is out there in the vast universe that I cant see with my limited eyesight, but the camera can capture with long exposures. For me nothing is more peaceful or awe inspiring than sitting outside on a warm summers night gazing at the majestic beauty of the universe and capturing all that wonderful light to bring indoors for everyone's enjoyment !

May 1 - May 31, 2008 :: THE BOTANICAL THREAD
Photography by Kaitlin Wilson - bryant

Kaitlin is currently completing her MFA in Imaging Arts at the Rochester institute of Technology. Her work revolves around themes of horticulture, memory and family. She has found her passion in teaching,education, design and photography.

The Botanical Thread

This series of botanical photographs questions our multifaceted relationships with nature. The acts of binding and sewing tie the work together. The processes were performed as emotional responses and evolved to speak to a variety of concepts: the binding of oneself, life cycles, acts of healing and destroying. There is an intentional fluidity and poeticism to the images through which they reference varying qualities of the natural world. They ebb and flow, speaking to one another through acts of tension and release, violence and healing.
